I didn’t get my period until I was 17, and even had an ultrasound to determine if I even had a uterus or not. While all of my friends complained about their periods, I couldn’t wait to get mine. I felt like I was missing out on a part of being a woman. At the same time, I had been suffering through pretty bad acne and was waiting to start my period so that I could go on birth control to help the acne, and avoid going on Accutane. So when it did arrive, I went straight on the pill.
I was on the pill throughout college. Every single month was an emotional roller coaster, not to mention I experienced a laundry list of symptoms that come with being on the pill. I didn't feel like myself at all. I decided I’d finally had enough and got off the pill. A year passed and my period never came back...
HOW IT ALL BEGAN
After seeking medical advice, I was diagnosed with PCOS. And my doctor’s answer to this? Yup, you guessed it - go back on the pill. I was so frustrated, let down and defeated by this answer, not to mention the fact that the doctor completely dismissed my negative experience and extreme list of symptoms while being on the pill. Going back on the pill was a complete bandaid solution that didn’t at all address my PCOS, it just masked it. I decided enough was enough, it was time to take my health into my own hands.
Like many people, I found comfort in knowing I wasn't the only one going through this and started following lots of people online with PCOS claiming that a vegan diet helped them with their symptoms - and since it was helping others, I assumed it would help me. So for a year I was vegan. But I was unprepared and uneducated on what goes in to eating a healthy vegan diet. After months of having no energy, and not seeing any improvement in my menstrual health, I knew it was time to get help.
